The History of Sterling Caravans
Sterling caravans have a storied history marked by innovation, quality, and a commitment to meeting the evolving needs of caravanners. The brand’s journey began in 1994, when Swift Leisure purchased Sprite Leisure, laying the groundwork for the leisure tourer market. By 1995, the Sprite Leisure name was replaced with Sterling, heralding a fresh identity that would soon become synonymous with modern design and forward-thinking engineering.
In 1996, Swift relaunched the Eccles under the Sterling brand, combining the Eccles’s rich heritage with Sterling’s innovative approach. This move signalled the beginning of a series of developments that would position Sterling caravans as leaders in the industry. In 2009, the brand celebrated its 90th anniversary with the release of the special “Ruby” layout, a model that reflected both tradition and modernity, capturing the attention of enthusiasts.
As the demand for advanced features grew, Sterling continued to innovate. In 2012, the Eccles range was updated with Alde central heating, providing superior comfort for year-round use, while a reduction in weight made towing more accessible to a broader range of tourers. This combination of practicality and luxury demonstrated Sterling’s dedication to enhancing the caravanning experience.
In 2014, the brand introduced the Sterling Continental range, showcasing the cutting-edge Smart HT technology. This construction method not only improved durability and insulation but also set the standard in caravan manufacturing, further solidifying Sterling’s reputation as a trailblazer.
Despite its success, the Sterling name came to an end in 2018, when the range was discontinued, and the Eccles line was rebranded as the Swift Eccles. While the Sterling brand is no longer in production, its legacy lives on in the preowned market, where these models remain highly sought after for their innovation, quality, and timeless appeal!
